The fantastic learning adventures of "Out of This World" would not have been possible without the following people. My sincere thanks goes out to everyone involved.
"Out of This World" Leader Guide
Book #2: The Courage to Stop a Bully
Welcome to the "Out of This World" (OOTW) Leader Guide. This section has been created to guide you, page by page, in achieving OOTW's full potential in working with youth.
OBJECTIVE: Identifying concern for others.
When Max wakes up he realizes that he's in a cell, captured by Secca Ma! Although he has every reason to be concerned for his own problems, he immediately realizes that Tiglos is not with them. Max demonstrates concern for someone other than just himself.
Discussion Questions:
Who are some people you care for more than yourself?
Who are some people that look out for you before looking out for themselves?
How does that make you feel when other people care for you?
OBJECTIVE: Doing the right thing & learning to trust someone.
There are two separate lessons being taught in these pages. First, Tiglos won't tell Secca Ma the Unfortunate's secrets, even though this means it will make things more difficult for him. Second, Max and Marcania meet Hope and realize they can combine their strengths to get out of the prison. Max learns to take a chance at trusting Hope.
Discussion Questions:
Has there ever been a time where you gave up your own desires to help someone else?
Have you ever met someone who at first you didn't trust but had to learn how too?
Did learning to trust someone work out for the better or worse? Why?
OBJECTIVE: The making of Secca Ma, why people become bullies.
We learn that Secca Ma and Tiglos were actually best friends at one time. After disagreements and different perspectives they quickly lose their friendship and Secca Ma goes as far as becoming an enemy. Secca Ma also recruits others to bully Tiglos.
Discussion Questions:
Have you ever had a friendship with someone that turned unhealthy? With who?
What were the reasons the relationship went bad?
Were you able to once again become friends and move past the conflict?
OBJECTIVE: Standing up to a Bully.
Tiglos and Secca Ma finally have a confrontation. Tiglos is standing up for himself but makes sure he does not fight to solve his problem.
Discussion Questions:
Who are some heroes (that you know or in movies) that deal with bullying without fighting?
Did you want Tiglos to stand up and punch Secca Ma? Is that feeling "normal"? Why?
What could have been consequences for Tiglos if he'd used violence to solve the problem?
OBJECTIVE: Finding better ways to change a situation rather than fighting.
Tiglos tells Secca Ma that he continues to oppose bullies by finding ways to work through confrontation without intimidation or force. Also, X-35 and Hope are working together on a mission and are learning to trust one another.
Discussion Questions:
What are the different ways in which you can nonviolently stand up to a bully?
Are there programs at your school that help deal with bullying? If not, could you start one?
How has working together with someone produced better outcomes than working alone?
OBJECTIVE: Learning to work together, instead of against one another, equals success.
Max and the crew escape due to working together and learning to trust one another. Quite the opposite of what Secca Ma and Kyros are doing, trying to bully everyone to do what they want, and not even trusting each other.
Discussion Questions:
Who are your good friends that you work with?
Even when you have disagreements, are you able to work it out?
What are some ways you work it out?
*Remember to always refresh the last session story before working on the next chapter.
Out of This World is a psycho-educational, therapeutic tool designed for experiential work with children in grades 3 through 12. The goal of OOTW is for the child to be excited about the characters and the fantastic world in which they live. By reading the stories and sharing with peers, the child will learn to emulate the characters, and most importantly, emulate the positive behaviors.
We recommend that you read the story out loud with the child, stopping when necessary for clarification. This book contains reproducible Activity Pages. Please feel free to make as many copies as you would like for homework assignments or group work.
