So what is Out of This World anyway? What's it's purpose? Why was it created?
Out of This World is what I would call a bibliotherapy comic book. What is that? Bibliotherapywhat? Here...let me break it down for you.
In the dictionary, bibliotherapy is defined like this: A form of supportive psychotherapy in which carefully selected reading materials are used to assist a subject in solving personal problems or for other therapeutic purposes.
Okay, that made it more confusing. So now let me try to explain what all of that meant. I'm sure you know counselors at school. Or maybe you have seen a therapist before in an office or one that comes to your home. Or maybe you have had a mentor, a big brother, a big sister, or a family member or friend that you have gone to for advise. All of these people can help you with counseling, or as it is stated in the definition, therapy.
Therapy is a way to talk about issues that are bothering you and find ways to deal with these issues in an effective and healthy manner. When we are working with children we like to find "tools" that assist the children in learning the skills and subjects that we are talking about. So we can use games, drawing, or other various ways to counsel. Or in the case of OOTW, we can use bibliotherapy.
Out of This World is different from ordinary bibliotherapy though, as we don't use previously existing material to teach kids. Rather, we are devising these comic book stories and characters to assist in learning about subjects that we and countless others feel are important to kids just like you. Also, we like comics so much and see the benefit that they can have on kids, we felt it would be a great way to tell our stories, through the sequential art stories (which is just a fancy way of saying comic book!).
So in Out of This World, Max will be coming up against various situations and issues that kids just like you go through everyday. Now grant it, kids just like you are not stranded in another universe and being attacked by giant robots. But, the themes and issues of the books will be similar to what we all go through everyday. Just not as boring.
In short, OOTW is here to help you. Maybe you have had the same problems already in life, or maybe you are having these problems right now. Or even, maybe you will have these issues in your future and learning about them now will help you tackle that problem when it comes knocking on your door. But hopefully, OOTW will demonstrate healthy and appropriate ways of getting through the rough spots that life tends to throw your way.
